JAPN 301: Advanced Japanese Language Culture and Communication
Course Description:
This course further continues development of advanced proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge through content-based instruction. Taught in Japanese.
Narrative:
JAPN 301 satisfies MLO 1 : Language and communication. We learned about about all three style of speaking that are required for the MLO: Interpersonal, Presentational, and Interpretive speaking. Within the book that we used there were examples and exercises that fulfilled each one. There was a wide range of grammar we used from colloquial expressions (interpersonal) to academic substitutes for interpersonal phrases. for example 減るbecome減少する. There were three presentations throughout the class. One was about and enjoyable time that we had in Japan, the midterm was on a lesson from the book, and the final was a more in depth look at an aspect of one of the chapters in the book. For the midterm, I chose to do my presentation on sentence ending particles like か, よ, and ね, and the different meanings that are implied through upwards and downwards inflection (phonology) . My final was on the composer Nobuo Uematsu, who wrote most of the music for the Legendary Final Fantasy series (Popular Culture). Through these three presentations and homework and classwork exercises, I feel that I successfully fulfilled MLO's for the course.
This class was by far one of the most challenging courses that I had taken. After coming back from Japan I felt that I had a relatively good grasp on the Japanese language, but after the first week of classes, I had realized that I was completely wrong. JAPN 301 was about the same difficulty as the class above the one I took in Japan. While I struggled for the first couple of weeks I eventually regained my footing and was able to keep up with the pace of the class. After I had completed the final script I truly realized that while my Japanese speaking ability was so-so, my writing ability had improved so much from the semester before I went to Japan. The skills that we learned in this class had helped immeasurably during the capstone process.
